personality traits

Diego tries to act as serious with a hint of pessimism, as a stern man with little time for nonsense. However, he struggles to uphold this idealized version of himself, often being gentler than he intends and cracking one too many jokes for his own liking. He has little respect for those who uphold the law rather than justice itself. Diego feels the need to be in control of things and is greatly uncomfortable when he isn't. The ex-detective stores hard candy in his coat pockets, needing it to suck on while he does other things to keep himself from clenching his jaw.

note

this character was initially an interpritation of the night patrol skin for jose baden / first officer bfore diego was fully developed into an original character. if there are similarities between the two in terms of appearance or anything, this is why.

lore (contains spoilers!)

He was born in Spain in 1912 and migrated to America in his teens, where he and his parents got his name legally to be Diego Ferrer Iglesias, though he goes just by Diego Ferrer to fit in more. He read a lot of mystery novels, Agatha Christie especially, which sort of formed his opinions on justice and his desire to help others. He became a homicide detective after attending police academy and spending time as a regular officer, where he began to resent most on the force because. Cops suck. Eventually he starts drinking to cope with his dissolutionment with his ideal job and how horrible the world around him is. It gets really bad, as addiction does, and eventually leads him to fumble a case- not that anyone knows it but himself and the perpetrator, who he realizes a little too late is actually one of his superiors. The wrong person is imprisoned and sentenced to death row, and Diego is demoted so he doesn't have access to the files that he would need to prove the person innocent. He is now a patrol officer. Instead of delving into despair, he decides that if he can't be the perfect, ideal detective he always wanted to be, he can at least fake it. So he puts on this persona of a hardboiled and stoic detective, and tries to stop drinking and improve his life. That's when he gets a letter from a certain Baron who offers to help him with the case of the person on death row- he just needs to come to the manor.

roleplay example

The scowling man leaned his back against a street lamp, letting the light bathe him amidst the darkness of the clowdy night. Deigo sighed, crossing his arm across his chest, waiting for something to happen- anything, anything to solve his boredom in this moment. It was then that he spotted the young girl across the street. She was unaccompanied, strange for her apparent age. Standing up straight, Diego looked both ways before jogging across the road. As he got closer, he could hear the young girl sniffling. "Hey, little miss. Pretty late for you to be wandering by yourself. Haven't heard of a curfew? Where's your mama?" She looked up, and the officer could see her face was red and her eyes puffed up. "I don't need Mama. I'm... I'm running away."The officer frowned, then kneeled down to get to her eye level. "Yeah? Recall trying that one when I was an ankle biter. Seems like you're awfully upset. Need an ear?" It was dangerous for her to be wandering around on her own, especially at the time of night that they were in. It was his duty to protect civilians, and this young one was clearly in need. The least he could do was lend her an ear, a hand, and hopefully get her to go home.
